What Are Probiotics And Do I Need Them? Countless medical research projects have verified the benefits of probiotic supplementation, and probiotic formulas seem to be one of the hottest nutritional products on the market today. Numerous companies, from yogurt labels to drug manufacturers, are trying to find a way to cash in. Unfortunately all probiotic formulas are not created equally and it's easy to end up with inferior products.
First let's answer the second question from our lead-in... do you need probiotic supplementation with a product like AbsorbAid Platinum Plus? If you have ever taken antibiotics, especially multiple times over the years, the odds are the natural flora of your digestive system has been compromised. The same is true of regular consumption of alcohol, antacids, and some other medications. Even chlorinated drinking water has been shown to kill these beneficial microorganisms. So the simple answer would be yes for most individuals.

Now back to the first part of the question... what are probiotics? Your intestinal tract is filled with billions of bacteria, fungi, and other microscopic critters. Some of these are essential to good health, while others can be harmful. When the good guys ("friendly bacteria" or "good bacteria") are plentiful and healthy, they keep the bad guys in check in addition to performing other beneficial processes. When the good guys are in short supply, numerous disease processes can become established. So let's dig a little deeper.
Some of the diseases, illnesses, and health conditions that have been linked to having unbalanced digestive tract flora include diarrhea, colon cancer, high cholesterol, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), chronic gas, high blood pressure, ulcers, and inflammatory bowel disease. Research continues into these and many other health issues that may either be related to having a shortage of good gut flora or that may be successfully treated with probiotic supplementation.
You are probably familiar with the term "lactose intolerant". This medical term is used to describe individuals who experience gas, bloating, and cramping (often severe) after consuming dairy products due to their body's inability to properly digest and break down the lactose (milk sugar) found in foods containing dairy. Lactose intolerance is caused by a shortage of a particular component in the intestinal track of these individuals. For many people, supplementation with the digestive enzyme lactase can allow them to once again enjoy ice cream, cheese, and other foods containing milk. (Note: Both AbsorbAid and AbsorbAid Platinum Plus contain lactase.) This is just one simple example of how enzymes and probiotics can directly impact a negative digestive health condition.
We tend to think of white blood cells, macrophages, B cells, NK killer cells, T cells, and other sickness fighting components of our blood as constituting the majority of our body's defenses, but here's an interesting fact... roughly 80% of your immune system lives in your gut.
The study of probiotics began in the early 1900's when a Nobel Prize winning Russian scientist, Elie Metchnikoff, identified the first strain of beneficial intestinal microorganism. Over these past 100 years, several strains of probiotics have been identified, but the majority of research has centered around the two most common probiotic strains used in modern supplements... L. acidophilus and B. bifidum (Lactobacillis Acidophilus and Bifidobacterium Bifidus.)
This is why each AbsorbAid Platinum Plus capsule, in addition to containing 12 different digestive enzymes, contains L. acidophilus and B. bifidum. AbsorbAid also contains three other probiotic strains that have each shown promising results in numerous medical studies... Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus delbrueckii, and Lactobacillus rhamnosus. (See sidebar for other active components of AbsorbAid and complete ingredient list.)
Probiotics are live microorganisms (primarily beneficial bacteria). Unlike many probiotic supplements, AbsorbAid Platinum Plus is heat stable, meaning it doesn't need to be refrigerated in order to protect the viability of the probiotics.
It takes many years for your intestinal flora to become unbalanced, so regular supplementation with probiotics over time will be needed to reestablish a healthy population. Plus it is important that any future use of antibiotics, antacids, alcohol, or other substances that harm probiotic levels be promptly followed up with probiotic supplementation. The good news is that probiotic supplements are considered very safe, since you are only replacing through supplementation the microorganisms that already exist in your digestive tract.
One question often raised by those who decide to take probiotics is... what is the best time of day to take your probiotic supplements? Since stomach acid can reduce the effectiveness and viability of probiotics, they should be taken with water or fruit juice on an empty stomach about 10 to 15 minutes before eating breakfast.
Another question concerns whether you can get the probiotics you need from yogurt. While old fashioned "raw" yogurts do contain various probiotic strains, almost all yogurts found on store shelves today (including USDA certified organic yogurts) have been pasteurized... meaning the high heat used will have killed most if not all of the probiotics contained in it. Frozen yogurt is even worse, with an almost 100% chance that all of the cultures it contains are dead.
While modern medicine is great at patching up our bodies from injuries like serious cuts and broken bones, it often just can't provide the answers we need for dealing with modern diseases or chronic health conditions. Too often modern drugs just mask symptoms. Increasingly Americans are looking for natural ways to help their bodies recover from health problems caused by exposure to the countless toxic substances found in today's environment.
Probiotics are a major piece of the natural healing puzzle, and AbsorbAid Platinum Plus gives you the highest quality probiotic strains packaged with beneficial natural digestive enzymes to provide a complete solution for your digestive concerns.

My Personal Digestion Story... I've always had a very high metabolism and in many ways am fortunate as I have always been able to eat as much as I want (even junk food) with worrying about weight gain. However, there was a very serious downside to this. Consuming mass quantities of food throughout my life put a huge strain on my digestive system, and as I entered my mid-20's I began to experience various problems. Gas, indigestion, incomplete digestion, mucous in my stool, and stomach pain were among some of the things I suffered with on a sporadic basis.
By the time I hit 30 years of age, my overall health had begun to deteriorate. I have always been athletic and have worked out every morning seven days a week since I was 12, so I blamed my decline on business stress and kept trying to fight through it. I've never smoked, used drugs, or abused alcohol... and even back in my 20's I ate a very healthy diet. (Just way too much)
That fall I ended up in the emergency room. I was pale, weak, and my lungs were inflamed. The hospital staff poked, prodded, stuck, scanned, x-rayed... you name it, but every test came back negative. The doctor took the shotgun approach and gave me an antibiotic (just in case), Prednisone (for the inflammation), and some narcotic cough syrup. I spent the next three weeks in bed, and though my lungs improved greatly I was too weak to do anything.
Finally I gathered enough strength to try to return to work, but within a couple of hours I had collapsed again. That began a two-year journey I never want to experience again. I was sent to various specialists, all of who just scratched their heads and gave up. No one could pinpoint the cause of my problems.
I still had a patch of inflammation in my lungs, but a biopsy came back clear for cancer and the cause of the inflammation was officially listed as unknown. My stomach stayed bloated all of the time, my sinuses drained constantly, I had recurring bouts of bronchitis, my liver would swell up, I ached all over... and I was still too weak to work. Fortunately a family member recommended I see an allergist in a nearby town who was willing to experiment and search out unconventional causes and treatments.
Soon I discovered I had developed several food allergies along with some food sensitivities. I was also diagnosed with candidiasis, which is caused by an overgrowth of the yeast "Candida" in the intestinal tract. To make a long story short, all of that stress I had placed on my digestive system by eating mass quantities of food all those years had caused serious damage to my digestive system. This led to something known as "leaky gut syndrome", a condition where the space between the cells in the intestinal lining becomes wider than it should. This allows partially digested food particles to pass into the bloodstream where they are seen by the immune system as dangerous invaders. The body produces anti-bodies to fight this enemy (food) and soon you develop food allergies and sensitivities.
The underlying inflammation in my digestive tract along with several rounds of antibiotics also caused my digestive flora to get out of balance, and this is what allowed the overgrowth of Candida. We all have Candida in our body, but when our digestive system is healthy the "good guys" keep this bad guy under control. Additionally, even though I was eating healthy foods my body just wasn't absorbing the necessary nutrients I needed due to the underlying intestinal inflammation. It was also determined that I had a duodenal ulcer.
I had allowed myself to get in such foul shape that it took a couple of years for me to regain my health. (You can read more about how AbsorbAid helped me overcome most of my food allergies and sensitivities on the page on this site about food allergies.)
I maintained a healthy diet and cut way back on the amount of food I ate. The AbsorbAid Platinum Plus helped me to better digest and absorb my food and the other nutritional supplements I was taking. The probiotics in AbsorbAid Platinum Plus helped restore balance to my intestinal flora and I soon overcame the candidiasis... the genie was back in the bottle. Of course I continued to exercise daily, and get at least eight hours of sleep each night.
Eventually I was back out in the business world and leading a very active life. I've continued to take AbsorbAid with every meal all these years and have been so pleased and impressed with what AbsorbAid Platinum Plus has done for me personally, that I established a business relationship with AbsorbAid a few years ago.
It has been said that good health starts in the gut, and in my case I know this to be true. Chuck
